Shacter Family Bikes Across Iceland To Raise Money For WJCT

Shacter Family

Bags and bikes packed and ready to go - the Shacter family is setting off to bike across Iceland to raise money for WJCT.

The family, David, Melody, Jac, Zach and his girlfriend Rachelle, will ride over 800 miles over the span of a month.

Melody Shacter will be spending her 54th birthday on the trip.

“I never dreamed I would spend it riding a bike and sleeping on the ground in a tent,” said Melody. “Having kids stretches you in ways you can never imagine!”

The family set up a Tumblr account to chronicle the adventure. So far the planning process involving everything from gear, to food, to training is documented.

“This has been quite the undertaking, as we are doing this on our own without a tour company,” Melody said.

A trailer attached to Jac and Zach’s bike will carry the food and camp gear, as the family pedals together around the 174 mile wide island country of Iceland.

Because food is expensive in Iceland, Melody learned to make dehydrated meals.  They have a variety of 25 breakfasts and 25 dinners packed to be eaten at camp.“We’re trying to save where we can!” writes Rachelle on the site.

The family flies in to Iceland’s capital Reykjavík on Tuesday. The Tumblr site will be updated throughout the trip with photos and stories from their adventure.

The Shacter family has supported WJCT for many years. Melody Shacter is on the station's Board of Trustees, and David is a past chair of the Board.
