The organization that founded Black History Month has chosen Jacksonville as the site of its annual convention this fall.
The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), will meet October 2-6 at the Hyatt in downtown Jacksonville.
The annual meeting will mark the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington, during which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his historic "I Have A Dream" speech.
"We are excited to hold our annual convention in Jacksonville," says ASALH Executive Director Sylvia Cyrus.
"Both Jacksonville and St. Augustine have a rich and vibrant history and claim prominent African-American leaders and historical figures."
Cyrus says the convention will serve as a venue to bring together scholars, activists, and policy experts. Early bird registration ends Saturday. You can get tickets and more information at www.asalh.org.
