What Are The Benefits Of Gender-Based Education?

The Duval County School Board is poised to approve the Eugene J. Butler Young Men’s and Young Women’s Leadership and Technology Academy next week.

The school, converted from co-ed Butler Middle School, will be the first gender-based traditional public school in Duval County, offering single-gender core classes with separate principals and guidance counselors.

Stephen Davis, an associate professor of education at Jacksonville University, has been studying the gender differences in learning for the past three years with a focus on how boys learn. It’s a controversial topic.

WJCT’s Rhema Thompson spoke with Davis about the research, benefits and challenges of gender-based learning.

Rhema Thompson began her post at WJCT on a very cold day in January 2014 and left WJCT to join the team at The Florida Times Union in December 2014.
