The question of student self-defense is under review right now in Duval County Public Schools. A series of proposed changes to the district's code of student conduct would change the way students are punished if they get involved in a fight on school grounds.
As it stands now, all students involved in a fight face the same punishment. However, under the revised rules, those who initiate a fight or are mutually involved in it would face harsher penalties than students who fought as a response to an attack.
However, one school board member says the revisions don’t go far enough.
