Duval County School Board Regroups After Member’s Exit

The Duval County School Board went from seven to six members after Jason Fischer resigned to run for state House this month.

Now, the even-numbered board is considering changing its rule for breaking ties.

Currently, the chairperson’s vote would break a tie, but board member Scott Shine is suggesting throwing out that rule. Instead, he wants a tied vote to cause a motion to fail, which is in line with Robert’s Rules of Order, a guide for conducting public meetings.

If the Board approves the change next month, it would have to also get the OK from the City Council and state legislators.

When Fischer was on the board, votes were often split 4-to-3.
