05/19/15: Public Safety And Election 2015; Book Club; Healing Hands Clinic; Memorial Day Light Fest

As voters cast their ballots for mayor, sheriff and City Council seats, Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland joins us with an update about voter turnout in this election.

Public safety has emerged as a major issue in Jacksonville’s mayor’s race, with incumbent Mayor Alvin Brown defending his approach to this core function of government, while challenger Lenny Curry has hammered Brown’s administration on the issue of violent crime. In particular, the Curry campaign has pounded the messaging that Brown “cut 147 police officers” from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. That claim was challenged last week in a Florida Times-Union article by reporter David Bauerlein. That article was then refuted by outgoing Sherriff John Rutherford. We speak with David Bauerlein about the divisive issue of public safety.

In this month's edition of our First Coast Connect Book Club, book blogger Stacey Goldring discusses how the themes of E.L. Doctorow's historical novel "Ragtime" resonate with contemporary issues.

We also learn about thew new Healing Hands Clinic, the only free dental clinic for low-income adults in Duval County.

And we get a preview of this weekend's Memorial Day Light Festival.
