01/05/16: Rep. Janet Adkins; Women In Media; 'Great Decisions' Discussion Series

A new study from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement  has found a backlog of at least 13, 000 untested sexual-assault kits in Florida. There are nearly 1,500 untested kits in Duval County alone.

Managing that backlog could cost as much as $32 million dollars.

The study is under review in Tallahassee as the 2016 legislative session kicks off next week.

Rep. Janet Adkins (R-Fernandina Beach) is planning to introduce legislation to reduce this backlog, and create clear standards for testing sexual-assault kits. She joins us to discuss this.

According to the Women’s Media Center, which tracks the representation of women in all forms of media, women remain underrepresented in newspapers, on television, in talk radio, in film, and in decision-making positions across all platforms. We look at the issue of gender equality in the media with Kerry Heaps, President of Strictly Marketing Magazine and host of Talk Radio, Knockout Marketing, and Michelle Dutro, host of "The Game Changer Podcast."

The "Great Decisions" initiative, organized by the Foreign Policy Association, is America's largest discussion series on world affairs. The series will be held locally at the Jacksonville Public Library's Southeast branch. We preview the program's first discussion, on shifting alliances in the Middle East, with facilitator Dr. Parvez Ahmed and library director Barbara Gubbin.
