04/20/16: Fair Housing; HEAL Zoo Walk For Autism; 'Whiskey, Wine And Wildlife' On Jekyll Island

Fair Housing

April marks Fair Housing Month.

It’s a time to commemorate the 1968 passage of the Fair Housing Act, which prohibits discrimination in housing. Citizens cannot be discriminated against based on gender, race, color, national origin, religion, disability or family status. Local ordinances may offer additional protection.

The 2016 Florida Fair Housing Summit takes place next week in Orlando.

Demand for affordable housing is on the rise, and low-income households are feeling the pinch. Demand for rental units is also growing, but Jacksonville and Florida don’t have enough affordable rental housing to meet that demand.

We discuss affordable and fair housing with Katherine Hansen, a fair housing attorney with Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, and Shannon Nazworth, executive director of Ability Housing, a local nonprofit serving the homeless and people at-risk of being homeless.

HEAL Zoo Walk for Autism

The Ponte Vedra-based HEAL (Healing Every Autistic Life) Foundation will bring local families together for a day of zoo animals, music, and activities this weekend.

The HEAL Zoo Walk For Autism takes place Sunday, April 24, at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens.

We preview the event and discuss the organization's work with founder Leslie Weed and her daughter Haley Weed.

Whiskey, Wine and Wildlife

The upcoming Whiskey, Wine and Wildlife event at the Westin on Jekyll Island, GA, will combine food and beverages from renowned Southern chefs with conservation efforts on the island.

We speak with Kevin Baker, marketing director with the Westin Jekyll Island.

Sean Birch joined the WJCT team in late 2011 and was with the company until 2016.
