06/15/16: Tommy Hazouri; Bear Hunt Protests; Michael Wiley; Swamp Challenge; Go Skate Jax Fest

Tommy Hazouri

Jacksonville City Councilman Tommy Hazouri says he will introduce new legislation to update the city's human rights ordinance to provide legal protection for LGBT residents.

Hazouri withdrew a similar bill earlier this year because there were not enough votes on the Council to pass the measure.

Now though, as the world mourns the victims of the mass shooting at the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando, Hazouri says the HRO has fresh urgency in Jacksonville.

Tommy Hazouri joins us to discuss the issue.

Bear Hunt Protests

Protests are set at locations around the state this Friday against the possibility of another bear hunt in Florida.

The state’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is currently looking at several options for the 2016 hunt.

We speak with animal welfare activist Adam Sugalski, executive director of OneProtest, and Dr. Pieter Kat, director of the internal lion conservation group LionAid, about their protests of the hunt.

Michael Wiley

Jacksonville author Michael Wiley joins us with a look at his new novel, "Black Hammock."

The thriller is the latest in Wiley's Daniel Turner series, and is set on Jacksonville's Black Hammock Island.

Swamp Challenge

The 2016 Swamp Challenge fitness event takes place this weekend at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville.

We preview the event with spokesperson Stephanie McCarthy.

Go Skate Jax Festival

This weekend's Go Skate Jax event is three days of skating, food trucks and public art.

Festival creators and Block Skate Supply owners Mike Peterson and James Smith join us with a look at what's planned, and to discuss a possible City Council measure to ban skateboarding in downtown Jacksonville.

Sean Birch joined the WJCT team in late 2011 and was with the company until 2016.
