9/06/2016: Melissa Nelson; Aneurysm Awareness; 'Harvest Moon Rising'
State attorney-elect Melissa Nelson ousted incumbent Angela Corey in a landslide last month. On Monday she joined Melissa Ross to talk about the transition and what we can expect from her office when she takes over in January. We also heard from Dr. NimaAghaebrahim from Baptist Health about recent progress in the treatment of aneurysms. Jon Heymann, CEO of the Jacksonville Children’s Commission, talked about programs available to local youth and the Timucuan Parks Foundation told us about a fundraiser to mark the centennial of the National Parks Service.
Nelson was able to easily win the State Attorney primary election last month 64 percent to 26 percent. With no opposition in November she will take office in January. Nelson spoke with Ross about some of the issues she’ll face when she takes over for Corey.
An estimated 6 million people in the United States have an unruptured brain aneurysm. They can occur at any age but are most prevalent in people ages 50 to 60. September is National Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month. Aghaebrahim is an interventional neurologist with Lyerly Neurosurgery and Baptist Health. He joined Ross to talk about aneurysms and some of the ways they can be prevented and treated.
Jacksonville Children’s Commission
With the new school year well under way there are many programs available for youth in Duval County. Jacksonville Children’s Commission CEO Jon Haymann joined the show to talk about some of the fall programs, the Jacksonville Journey and future plans of the JCC.
Timucuan ‘Harvest Moon Rising’
The Timucuan Parks Foundation is commemorating the 100th anniversary of the National Parks Service with the “Harvest Moon Rising” event on Sept. 17. Participants will be able to take a rare tour of the home of former Florida Governor Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, which is part of the Park Service. Foundation board president Barbara Goodman and Executive Director Mark Middlebrook spoke with Ross about Timucuan’s history and next week’s fundraiser.
