On the heels of Monday night’s presidential debate, host Melissa Ross spoke with millennial voters democrat Meredith O’Malley Johnson and republican Keith Walters. We also heard from Kelly Mannel and Jan Lipsky about the Society of Emotional Intelligence’s upcoming international conference in Jacksonville, and presenter Marsha Phelts told us about this Friday’s Storytelling Slam in Fernandina Beach.
First Debate Reax
Most analysts said Hillary Clinton got the upper hand on Donald Trump Monday night during the first of their three scheduled debates. They also say Trump was able to get in some shots of this own. Johnson and Walters are members of Jax Young Voters Coalition. They gave their reaction to the debate and how candidates can better address the needs of younger voters. “Ballots and Brews: A Political Poster Show,” sponsored by the Young Voters Coalition will be held Saturday, Oct. 1 from 6pm to 9pm at Intuition Ale Works on Bay Street. At the event voters can mingle with candidates, elected officials, campaign representatives and each other.
Emotional Intelligence
A growing body of research is supporting the importance of emotional intelligence. In the workplace, one’s emotional quotient often be just as,or sometimes more important than one’s IQ. Ross spoke with Manuel and Lipsky about what emotional intelligence and why it’s important in assessing someone’s leadership qualities. Their annual conference is slated for Oct. 13-14 at the University Club in downtown Jacksonville.
Storytelling Slam
The Friends of the Fernandina Beach Library is holding its annual Storytelling Slam on Friday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. This year’s theme is “I Was So Embarrassed.” Participants will tell amusing stories about their most embarrassing moments. Ross spoke with Marsha Phelts, who is a presenter at the event and will share her most embarrassing moment.
