First Coast Connect

11/21/2016: Project Open Door; WJCT Holiday Programming; Cole Pepper

Monday on “First Coast Connect,” guest host Jessica Palombo was joined by Darnell Smith, incoming co-chair of the JAX Chamber, and Project New Hope President and CEO Kevin Gay. They talked about the Chamber’s Project Open Door. Cole Pepper talked about the Florida Gators’ winning the SEC Eastern Division and another frustrating loss by the Jaguars. And WJCT Music Director David Luckin and WJCT’s Karen Feagins stopped by with a preview of our holiday programming, starting with “Swamp Radio” on Thanksgiving morning at 9.

Project Open Door

More than 50 local businesses have signed on to the JAX Chamber’s Project Open Door. That’s a voluntary pledge to “ban the box” asking about criminal history on job applications. The idea is to not just automatically reject someone for employment just because of a criminal past.

WJCT Holiday Programming

We have several programs both on radio and TV for you to hear this holiday season, including the annual airing of Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant” on Electro Lounge Thanksgiving night. The Orson Welles radio version of A Christmas Carol will air Sunday on 89.9. From Nov. 24 to 27
WJCT Public Television will air a Downton Abbey marathon.

It was a great weekend for Gator fans as the University of Florida beat LSU in Baton Rouge in the game that was postponed due to Hurricane Matthew and moved because LSU refused to play in Gainesville. It wasn’t good news for the Jaguars, who lost in Detroit for their fifth loss in a row and guaranteed another non-winning season.
