Monday on First Coast Connect we were joined by Jimmy Orth of the St. Johns Riverkeeper and Quint White, head of the Marine Science Research Institute at Jacksonville University, to talk about the documentary “Troubled Waters.” Local attorney Wayne Hogan spoke about what toys should be avoided his holiday season. Activist Matt Killen talked about his trip to video protesters at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in South Dakota.
Troubled Waters
Pollution generated from fertilizer runoff to poorly treated municipal and industrial wastewater to failing septic tanks is fouling our rivers and streams. A new film, “Troubled Waters,” looks at these issues and is billed as a call to action for all of those hoping to preserve Florida’s rivers, lakes, springs, and aquifers.
Bad Toys
In 2015, 11 kids died and 254,200 toy-related injuries were treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Hogan brought the toys that made this year’s “10 Worst Toys” list. It’s compiled by the organization World Against Toys Causing Harm.
Matt Killen
On Sunday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced it will not approve an easement for the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline.
Protesters are hailing the announcement as a key victory for Native American tribes and others who have flocked to the state in recent months to protest the oil pipeline. Tribal leaders said it threatens the water supply at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, as well as the lands and artifacts they consider sacred.
