12/12/2016: United Health Services Investigation; Flamingo Magazine; 'Destination Craft'

Monday on First Coast Connect we were joined on the phone by BuzzFeed reporter Rosalind Adams about their year-long investigation into Universal Health Services, including in Jacksonville. Flamingo Magazine publisher and editor Jamie Rich told us about the December issue looking into how Florida celebrates winter. The host of new PBS show “Destination Craft” Jim West joined us by phone to talk about the program premiering Tuesday at 1 p.m. on WJCT.

United Health Services Investigation

Three prominent lawmakers have called for an investigation into America’s largest psychiatric chain, Universal Health Services.

A BuzzFeed News investigation found that at least 10 UHS hospitals locked in people who were not a danger to themselves or others and held them until their insurance ran out.

Employees of the hospital chain told BuzzFeed they were under pressure to fill beds by methods, including exaggerating people’s symptoms and distorting their words to make them sound suicidal.

One of these facilities is River Point, a UHS psychiatric hospital in Jacksonville.

UHS has denied it held people against their will solely for profit.

Flamingo Magazine

While much of the rest of the country is bundled up indoors, here in Florida the winter months mean it’s time to get outside.

December’s Flamingo Magazine includes articles about many outdoor activities, including Florida’s polo culture and a large feature of manatees.

Destination Craft
WJCT television viewers will have an opportunity to travel around the world and discover the treasures created by master artisans in a groundbreaking new series “Destination Craft” with Jim West.

Check out the new show starting at 1 p.m. Tuesday for the airing four preview episodes.
