4/14/2017: Media Roundtable; Burr On Retail Jobs; Soledad O'Brien; Morley

Friday on “First Coast Connect” our weekly Media Roundtable featured blogger Fred Matthews, WJCT reporter Lindsey Kilbride, Jacksonville Business Journal editor Tim Gibbons and WJCT business analyst John Burr. We also spoke with journalist Soledad O’Brien, who is holding a workshop for young women Saturday at WJCT and we heard on in-studio performance by singer-songwriter Morley.

Media Roundtable

Our panel discussed the aftermath of last Friday’s melee in Hemming Park, including Sheriff Mike Williams saying he will review JSO procedures involving public protests including from now separating protesters and counter-protesters. They also discussed the city’s $1.9 million settlement with the family of an unarmed man killed by police in 2012, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson’s visit to Eureka Garden and Congressman Al Lawson’s first Jacksonville Town Hall meeting since taking office.

Burr On Retail Jobs

Payless Shoes has gone bankrupt. Radio Shack and JC Penney are closing stores and thousands of Jacksonville area retails jobs have been lost. Burr said it’s part of a national trend that has escalated since the beginning of the year. All of it is happening as Amazon is expanding in Jacksonville.

Soledad O’Brien

Emmy Award winning network journalist Soledad O’Brien is bringing her PowHERful Foundation to Jacksonville. O’Brien will lead a conference geared to young women needing role models and advice on getting to and through college. The conference will be an all day event Saturday at WJCT.

Morley

World-renowned musician Dave Eggar performs in Jacksonville Saturday  at the Museum of Science and History. Joining Eggar will be the critically acclaimed vocalist  Morley and The Chamber Symphony of Peace, a special group that includes members of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra led by Concertmaster Philip Pan.

The show runs from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Doors open at 7.
