4/20/2017: March For Science; Elizabeth Gilbert; K9 United

Thursday on “First Coast Connect” we heard about Earth Day Marches for Science in Jacksonville, St. Augustine and hundreds of other cities around the world with Bonnie Hendrix and Boa White, Women’s March, Jacksonville Chapter, co-captains; University of Florida Health-Jacksonville’s Dr. Marie Crandall; and the director of the Bryan-Gooding Planetarium at the Museum of Science and History Eddie Whisler. We also heard an interview with best-selling author Elizabeth Gilbert and Theatre Jacksonville executive director Sarah Boone. K9 United founder Debbie Johnson and Executive Director Eric Heineman talked about their organization and a Saturday fundraiser. 

March for Science

Scientific research has brought us vaccines, clean drinking water, electricity, the automobile and much more. This weekend, hundreds of marches for science will take place around the world on Earth Day. The marches are intended to energize the scientific community and stress the importance and validity of scientific research. The Jacksonville march begins 10 a.m. Saturday at the Jacksonville Landing and ends at the Museum of Science and History. The St. Augustine march begins at 9 a.m. at the Willie Galimore Center.

Elizabeth Gilmore

Gilmore is the author of the best-seller “Eat, Pray, Love.” In her new book “Big Magic” she focuses on the message of not writing for money or fame, but instead for the joy it brings you. She be in Jacksonville Tuesday for a lecture and question-and-answer period at the Florida Theatre to raise funds Theatre Jacksonville.  

K9 United    

K9 United is a  non-profit organization that supports K9 police units on the First Coast. On Saturday, it will hold the second annual 5k race and one mile fun run in Nocatee. The event also includes K9 demonstrations and police equipment, the St. Johns County Police helicopter and Jacksonville’s SWAT BearCat armored vehicle. The race begins at 8 a.m. behind the Publix shopping center on Crosswater Boulevard.
