9/27/2017: National Recovery Month; 'Backcountry Trails Of Florida'; Avant Radio

Wednesday on “First Coast Connect,” we hear about September being National Recovery Month with Lakeview Health’s Juan Deas and alumni manager Ashley Harris (01:03).

Author and former land manager Terri Mashour joined us to talk about her new book,  “Backcounty Trails of Florida: A Guide to Hiking Florida’s Water Management Districts.” (32:47)

Creator Keith Marks joined the show to discuss the launch of Avant Radio on 89.9 on Sunday (41:49).

National Recovery Month

Governor Rick Scott and legislative leaders signaled Tuesday that addressing Florida's deadly opioid epidemic will be a high-profile issue during the 2018 session, with Scott saying he will propose spending $50 million on programs such as drug treatment. Scott is also pushing for other changes, including setting prescription limits for pain medication.

In Jacksonville, a pilot program is getting underway to better treat victims. The city is also looking at suing the pharmaceutical manufacturers of opiates as the body count grows.

Backcountry Trails of Florida

It’s a chance to experience wild Florida with a fascinating new guide to 100 off-the-grid hikes from every corner of the state. Florida’s five water management districts encompass millions of acres of public property that include thousands of miles of public trails. Mashour is a former land manager who knows all about these little-known places. “Backcountry Trails of Florida: A guide to Hiking Florida’s Water Management Districts” is a guide to discover the trails that even Florida natives may not know about.
