Kevin Meerschaert

Tuesday on First Coast Connect, in response to President Donald Trump declaring opioids a national health emergency, we looked at what is being done locally with Dr. Marcus De Carvalho from the Center for a Healthy Mind and Wellbeing (01:12).

Melissa spoke with former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson about her fight against sexual harassment in the workplace. Her Ted Talk in New Orleans this week will be simulcast in Jacksonville at the TedXFSCJ Women talk.

Women’s Center of Jacksonville Board President LiseEverly and TedXFSCJ student Kathryn Sands discussed the local portion of the program (29:44).

Our latest segment of Moveable Feast featured Executive Chef Dennis Chan from Blue Bamboo (46:06).

Opioid Emergency- Dr. Marcus De Carvalho

Last week, President Trump declared the opioid epidemic a national health emergency and asked Congress to authorize more funding for states and municipalities to combat the epidemic.

Many cities, like Jacksonville, are facing financial problems due to the crisis as the number of overdoses strain the budgets of the fire and rescue department and the medical examiner’s office.

There are organizations out there working to get more people off the highly addictive opioids and other drug addictions it can lead to. One is Jacksonville’s Center for a Healthy Mind and Wellbeing.

Gretchen Carlson - TedXFSCJ Women

Just over a year-and-a-half ago former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson rocked the media world when she sued the late Fox News chief Roger Ailes, accusing him of sexual harassment. Carlson’s lawsuit emboldened other women at the network to also come forward and expose a culture of harassment.

Ailes was eventually ousted from the network he had founded. He has since passed away.

Since her landmark lawsuit, Carlson has gone on to become the face of a movement, which focuses on ending harassment in the workplace across all industries, and changing American culture.

Carlson will be one of the featured speakers this week at the TEDWomen2017 Conference in New Orleans.

In Jacksonville, at the TedXFSCJ Women: Bridges conference you can take part in a simulcast event direct from that TED stage in the Big Easy.

The evening on the FSCJ Kent Campus will include a panel of local speakers who will discuss how gender intersects with poverty, and what Jacksonville nonprofits are doing to help.

Moveable Feast -Blue Bamboo

It’s one of the hottest restaurants on Jacksonville’s Southside. Blue Bamboo is known for hip Asian comfort food and unusual dishes created by Executive Chef Chan. It opened in 2005 and has since won numerous awards for its cuisine.
