1/30/2018: Juvenile Justice Reform; Wines With Music; Jayne Atkinson-Gill; Made In St. Augustine

Tuesday on First Coast Connect we spoke with attorney Rob Mason, Director of the Juvenile Division with 4th District Public Defender’s Office and a bipartisan effort in Tallahassee to reform the state’s juvenile justice system (01:08).

The latest edition of Moveable Feast features Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra supporter Bill Maletz speaking about the upcoming Wines for Music event at Marsh Landing Country Club (27:36).

Ahead of her speaking at next week’s Women with Heart Luncheon we spoke with House of Cards and 24 actress Jayne Atkinson-Gill (35:40).

Co-organizers of The Made in St. Augustine festival Monika Benthal and Jaclyn Zeichner joined the show to tell us about next month’s event (46:00).

Juvenile Justice Reform

A bill making its way through the Florida legislature could radically reform the way children are treated in the Juvenile Justice system.

The measure would put stricter limits on when and how juveniles can be tried as adults.

Florida is one of just 15 states that allow prosecutors to unilaterally decide to charge children as adults. That process is called direct filing.

But a proposed new law that just passed a state Senate committee, would permit kids’ lawyers to challenge the move, transferring some discretion from state attorneys to judges.

It’s part of a bipartisan push in Florida to reform the judicial system in a number of areas, particularly in the way it handles minors.

Moveable Feast- Wines For Music

Music has always been easy to partner with wine, as long it’s the right mix.

In Tuesday’s Moveable Feast, our look at dining and hospitality trends around the region, Leigh Cort of the Women’s Food Alliance speaks with Bill Maletz from BRASS, which supports the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, about the upcoming Wines for Music event with the JSO at Marsh Landing Country Club.

Jayne Atkinson-Gill

Actress Jayne Atkinson-Gill will serve as host for the "Women With Heart" Luncheon presented by Florida Blue on February 7 at the Florida Blue Conference Center.

Renowned for her roles on House of Cards, 24 and her Tony-nominated Broadway roles in The Rainmaker and Our Town, Atkinson-Gill's real-life sibling Dany Atkinson is just one of the “Women With Heart” to be honored at Jacksonville’s premier philanthropic luncheon that benefits Volunteers in Medicine.
