1/31/2018: The Great Society Book; Winter Planting; Tobacco Free Florida; Judy Wells

Lyndon Johnson Library

Wednesday on First Coast Connect we spoke with Politico contributing editor Joshua Zeitz, who is the author of the book Building The Great Society: Inside Lyndon Johnson’s White House (01:10).

Our Going Green segment featured Zak Furey from Garden of Eatin’ with a look at the best  herbs and vegetables to plant in the winter (18:20).

Vicki Evans from Tobacco Free Florida talked about how Floridians can get free help to stop smoking (30:53).

Travel blogger Judy Wells gave us some tips on great places to take a vacation this year (46:00).

The Great Society Book

Imagine what life would be like without Medicare, Medicaid, public broadcasting, voting rights, federal funding for public schools and environmental protections.

All of those initiatives came out of President Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society.

The Great Society was billed as a collection of programs the 36th president vowed would lead to “an end to poverty and racial injustice.”

Zeitz’s book explores the many accomplishments and controversies or the Johnson administration.

Going Green - Winter Planting

It’s the cool winter season in Florida, but actually a great time of year in this part of the country for growing all kinds of wonderful crops. You can do all kinds of winter planting right now, even if you have nothing but room for a tiny container garden.

Furey from The Garden of Eatin’ said greens, potatoes, carrots and several herbs grow very well in this kind of weather.

Tobacco Free Florida

The start of February on Thursday marks both American Heart Month and National Cancer Prevention Month, as well as World Cancer Day on Feb. 4.

Bringing further awareness to these causes, the Florida Department of Health’s Tobacco Free Florida program is encouraging tobacco users to improve their heart health and reduce their cancer risk by making a plan to quit tobacco this month.

Smoking is a major cause of cardiovascular disease and causes one of every three deaths from CVD. Additionally, smoking can cause cancer almost anywhere in the body.
