Mayo Clinic Cardiologist Dr. Sabrina Phillips and Florida Blue Market President Darnell Smith talked about Friday being National Wear Red Day to raise awareness of heart disease among women (39:02).  

Mayo Clinic Dr. Aubrey Thompson and former TV anchor Donna Deegan joined us to talk about breast cancer research and the upcoming 26.2 with Donna marathon (46:00).

Our panel talked about former Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown formally announcing his candidacy for the Florida’s 5th Congressional district Democratic Primary against incumbent U.S. Rep Al Lawson and the dust-up betweenMayor Lenny Curry and Councilmember Garrett Dennis.  

Women Wearing Red

Friday isNational Wear Red Day. It’s to raise awareness of heart disease.

It’s to get women to lead by example, and make the time to “know your numbers.”  The numbers being  Total Cholesterol, HDL (good) Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar and Body Mass Index (BMI).
 

It’s knowledge that can save your life. Nearly half of all Americans have high blood pressure.

 

26.2 With Donna

It’s one of the most popular marathon runs in the country and it’s always for a great cause.

The annual 26.2 with Donna Breast Cancer Marathon is scheduled for Feb. 11. It raises funds for breast cancer research, and also helps local women dealing with the disease. Along with the full marathon there are several shorter runs people can participate in.

One in eight women in the U.S will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime.
