Equal Pay Day
April 10, 2018 is Equal Pay Day. It’s the day women’s wages catch up to what men earned in 2017. This day is a symbolic marker that women have to work, on average, more than 15 months to make what men make in 12 months.
According to The Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR), women only earn 80 cents to every dollar earned by men for the same skills and jobs. There is greater disparity among Latinas and black women, IWPR says if things remain on the current course, the gap will not close for more than 100 years.
Moveable Feast - Your Pie
The percentage of women entering the franchising sector is increasing. The International Franchise Association says women now own more than 21 percent of all franchise businesses, including here in Jacksonville.

First Coast Connect Bookclub
It’s an acclaimed novel from Lebanese-American writer Rabih Alameddine.
An Unnecessary Woman is a portrait of an isolated woman with a dazzling mind as she comes to grips with getting old.
Alameddine's narrator is named Aaliya. She lives alone in Beirut, in the apartment she used to share with her husband before they divorced. Previously she ran a bookstore. Now she stays at home. Her life is pretty bare, mostly about books: reading constantly, then, once a year, translating a favorite volume into Arabic.
Our First Coast Connect Bookclub blogger Stacy Goldring will be discussing the book at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, at the Jacksonville Main Public Library.
Mosaic 2018
Well when you think of a mosaic, you imagine a piece of art made from many small pieces.
The event, Mosaic 2018, is pulling all of the pieces together when it comes to the issue of mental health awareness here on the First Coast.
Mosaic 2018 will be an interactive gathering that will feature a live and in-person interview with Melissa Ross and award-winning writer and "Selfie Queen of Jacksonville," Kerry Speckman. Mosaic will include food & drink, inspiring entertainment and interactive art activities.
It will be held Saturday on the roof of the Museum of Science and History.
