On the Fourth of July, a video broadcast by WJXT news partner News4Jax, showed a white JSO officer slamming a black suspect’s head into the pavement.

Now the Jacksonville NAACP branch is demanding an outside review of the controversial arrest.

Dan Scanlan is a reporter covering the case for The Florida Times-Union. He joined First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross Wednesday to tell us more on his findings.

Reports coming from detention camps around the United States say migrant children are being separated from their parents against a court order, according to the Houston Chronicle. Some people in Jacksonville and around the nation are taking a stand on the issue.

On Friday night, activists will join rallies around the world for the nationwide vigil, Lights for Liberty, to end human detention camps at the southern border.

Florida Refugee Organizer Basma Alawee sought asylum in the U.S. several years ago. She joined us along with founder of Liberty for Lights and attorney  Toby Gialluca, who is working with refugees in Texas.
