The conventional wisdom is that attending college is a good investment.
College graduates over a lifetime make - on average - about $1 million more than those with high school diplomas, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
At the same time, the student loan debt has more than doubled over the past decade to about $1.5 trillion, according to NPR.
In some cases, career and technical academies provide a higher return on invested education dollars. Jacksonville’s Tulsa Welding School was recently ranked by the Georgetown University Center on Education and Workforce as one of the top schools in the nation for highest return on investment education.

Lands’ End Lawsuit
Delta flight attendants and other workers have sued clothing giant Lands’ End. They say their “Passport Plum” uniforms are toxic and making them sick. At issue are workers having harmful allergic reactions to chemical additives and finishes Lands’ End added to make the uniforms waterproof, wrinkle and stain-resistant. The uniforms also include a deodorizing agent.
The class action litigation is spearheaded by local attorney Bruce Maxwell of the Terrell Hogan personal injury and wrongful death law firm. He's representing more than 500 Delta workers and joined us with more.
Wild Florida
Our new contributor Lisa Grubba joined us for Wild Florida. Lisa is a Florida Master Naturalist and journalist who’s covered outdoor issues in Florida for 15 years.
Grubba explained how it’s a great time of year in Florida to hike, with cool temperatures and no bugs. If you’re hiking out at the beach, you might see a right whale or watch for migrating birds.
Rethreaded And Amelia Toffee
January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, which seeks to bring attention to, and end, this form of modern-day slavery.
Tabula Rasa, Rethreaded, FreshJax, Amelia Toffee Company, and Craft are participating in a local cross collaboration to benefit Rethreaded, which helps survivors of human trafficking.
Kristin Keen, Executive Director at Rethreaded and Anita Comisky, founder and CEO of Amelia Toffee Company, joined us with the details.
Tabula Rasa is hosting the event at which they will be releasing the collaborative beer.
The beer will be made with survivor-made coffee from Rethreaded and toffee from Amelia Toffee Company.
The event will take place at Tabula Rasa on Thursday, January 30, from 6-8 p.m. Guests will enjoy handcrafted chili and a unique coffee-infused beer. Tickets are $20 each.
