Confederate Statue Debate; Bike For Cuba; Jazz Series In San Marco

Earlier this week, the House of Representatives voted to remove all Confederate statues from display in the U.S. Capitol.

However, two congressmen from Northeast Florida - John Rutherford and Michael Waltz - voted no on this measure.  The vote comes amidst local and national efforts to take down Confederate monuments.  Jacksonville resident Earl Johnson Jr. is founder of the national group Take It Down, and he joined us to share his thoughts.

Bike For Cuba

An activist and teacher named Carlos Lazo is bicycling into town this week. He’s on a national trek to present petitions to the White House to end the 60-plus year blockade against Cuba.  He’ll be in St. Augustine Friday and Jacksonville on Saturday, and told us about his efforts.

Jazz Discovery Series

If you’re looking for live music this weekend, come on out to San Marco’s Balis Park for some jazz on Saturday. Jazz performer and teacher John Lumpkin II joined us on what to expect from the event and tell us where to catch live jazz musicians around town.

Patrick Cantin can be reached at newsteam@wjct.org or on Twitter.
