Transit is Golden: the Benefits of Public Transit for Seniors

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority wants seniors to know about their public transportation options.

To demonstrate what’s available, the agency took riders on a journey Wednesday afternoon. The destination was a day at the museum.

The annual Transit is Golden event is hosted by JTA and the Florida Department of Transportation. The purpose is to inform older adults of the benefits of public transportation and ease their transition from driving.

After a meeting at downtown’s Mary L. Singleton Senior Center, 10 seniors were selected from a raffle to receive complimentary bus fare and a day at the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens. Participants enjoyed lunch and guided tours while at the museum.

After a tour of the gardens, Eddie Rogers said he’s happy to have won the raffle.

“The people are very nice,” Rogers said. “Very courteous and kind and I enjoyed them very much.”

The Transit is Golden event happens every year in cities across the state, including Miami and Orlando.
