A man and a woman were shot Friday morning after a fight broke out between motorists who pulled off Race Track Road in St. Johns County, and the man, who witnesses identified as the gunman is in custody, deputies told our News4Jax partner.
The shooting happened just after 11 a.m. near a shopping center near Julington Creek, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office. A few minutes after two motorists got into a physical confrontation, one man retrieved a gun from his car and fired several shots.
The two people shot drove themselves to Baptist South, and one of them was reported in critical condition, deputies said.
"We don't know what started this incident," St. Johns County Cmdr. Chuck Mulligan said. "From what we know right now, the individual who was doing the shooting shot two individuals in that second vehicle."
Mulligan said investigators are questioning the potential gunman, but that person is not currently under arrest.
Justin Louque, who was working at at auto shop nearby, heard the gunshots and saw a Saturn speeding away from a bank. He first thought it had been a robbery. The driver pulled the over and a young man got out with a gun, which he put down.
"He walked about 15 yards away from the gun, fell to the ground and put up his hands," Louque said. "He said they were running him off the road and they were assaulting him. ... You could tell he'd gotten beaten up. He kept saying, ''what would you have done?'"
Louque said he held the man at gunpoint until deputies arrived.
