St. Augustine Beach’s Pope Road beach access point will be closed on Nov. 27 due to a beach renourishment project.
The Army Corps of Engineers is heading the project according to the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners. The beach’s access point will serve as a staging area for equipment throughout the project, which is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2018.
This project will repair the critically-eroded shoreline that lies between Anastasia State Park and 8th Street in St. Augustine Beach.
The purpose of the renourishment is to mitigate for downdrift shoreline impacts caused by the Federal navigation channel at St. Augustine Inlet, and provide storm damage reduction for upland development.
The beach will remain open outside of work areas during the construction project but officials are encouraging residents and visitors to be very cautious when visiting during this time.
