Jacksonville Armada Scrambles After NASL Cancels 2018 Season

Jacksonville Armada FC

The Jacksonville Armada will put its contingency plan into action with word that the North American Soccer League  has canceled the 2018 season.

The NASL announced the cancellation Tuesday after failing to block the U.S. Soccer Federation from revoking its Division II status.

WJCT sports analyst Cole Pepper said the change is tantamount to a demotion for the Armada and the other NASL teams.

“The NASL owners didn’t want to be considered anything other than Division II which is just below MLS—Major League Soccer,” said Pepper.

The Armada, the Miami FC, and the New York Cosmos are expected to play in the National Premier Soccer League this spring while they plan their next step. But, Pepper said Armada owner Robert Palmer has probably got that figured out already.

“I suspect that Palmer will put his efforts toward trying to find other owners who are willing to band together to form a new league. Now the question becomes sanctioning, when the league season might start and what that league might look like.”

The Premier Soccer League begins its season April 15th.
