The widening of Kernan Boulevard got underway Wednesday morning with a groundbreaking ceremony.
The JTA Mobility Works’ project calls for widening Kernan to six lanes and adding a raised median between Atlantic Boulevard and Matthew Ungar Drive.
Kernan will also be widened to four lanes from Matthew Ungar Drive to McCormick Road.
The project includes curb and gutter improvements, sidewalks and a 12-foot multi-use path.
It’s expected to wrap up in the fall of 2020.
JTA Mobility Works has a long list of City Council approved road improvement projects that are funded with the revenue generated by a local gas tax.
