Black Creek In Clay County Enters 'Action Stage;' Residents Advised Of Potential Flooding

Clay County Emergency managers are warning residents of possible flooding along the north and south forks of Black Creek.

National Weather Service meteorologist Cindy Elsenheimer said Monday both bear watching.

“The south fork area of the Black Creek is in what we call “action stage” right now. So it hasn’t reached the flooding just yet. But from the rainfall yesterday there was a pretty significant rise on the Black Creek there at Penney Farms. It seems like the North Fork was similar, just not quite to flood stage just yet,” said Elsenheimer.

The north fork near Middleburg is expected to reach nearly 13 feet by Tuesday afternoon. Flood stage for that section of Black Creek is around 16 feet.

The south fork near Penney Farms is hovering around 12 feet which is only about two feet below flood stage.

Emergency officials fear unanticipated heavy rainfall this week could cause some flooding.

Residents are urged to monitor rainfall over the next few days and to sign up for alert notifications on Clay County’s website.
