Florida Gubernatorial Nominees Announce Their Running Mates

Both major party nominees for governor announced their picks for lieutenant governor Thursday morning.

Congressman Ron DeSantis, the Republican nominee for governor, selected Miami State Representative Jeanette Nuñez as his running mate. 

On the Democratic side, Andrew Gillum picked his former rival in the primary, Chris King.

“I am thrilled to welcome Chris King to the Democratic ticket this fall as our lieutenant governor. Chris has brought new and dynamic leadership to this state, and his innovative policy ideas and business acumen will help us move Florida forward,” said Gillum, who curently serves as Tallahassee's mayor.

The DeSantis campaign said that Nuñez is the first Cuban-American woman to run for lieutenant governor in Florida.

"Jeanette Nuñez is a strong, principled leader who will be an outstanding lieutenant governor for the people of Florida," DeSantis said. "She has a proven record of leadership and legislative accomplishments, delivering for both her constituents in Miami-Dade and the state of Florida as a whole."

Nuñez was first elected to the Florida House in 2010 while King describes himself as a “progressive entrepreneur” who founded a company that provides affordable housing to seniors and families in Florida and across the southeastern U.S.
