New Superheroes Exhibit Opens At MOSH This Weekend

From comics and movies to the campy Batman TV series of the 1960s, the history of superheroes will be on display beginning Saturday at Jacksonville’s Museum of Science and History.

The exhibition, called the Hall of Heroes, resulted from an online poll.

“Last year, the museum conducted a four-round poll, both online and onsite, in which the public voted for their favorite among 16 available exhibits,” said MOSH Curator Paul Bourcier in an email to WJCT News.

The Hall of Heroes features a full-scale, one-sided replica of Barris Kustoms' 1966 Batmobile from the TV series.

The original 1960s TV series Batmobile was based on a modified 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car that was put together by famed automotive customizer George Barris.

An interactive Batcave along with movie props, replicas and rare artifacts from past and present major motion pictures and television shows will also be on display.

The MOSH exhibit divides the spectrum of superpowers into four categories – powers of the body, powers of mastery, powers over the elements and the powers of gadgets.

A chronology of heroes featuring the likes of Superman, Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk and others is included in the display.

MOSH is hosting a public opening event for the exhibition on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. featuring the following activities:

  • Visitors will be encouraged to make their own comic strip by creating a story of their own superhero.
  • The Jacksonville Hot Wheels Club and MOSH superhero mascots will be in attendance.
  • A museum-wide scavenger hunt will be held.
  • There will be superhero science trivia in the JEA Science Theater before each Extreme Science Show at 11:20 a.m., 1:20 p.m. and 3:20 p.m..
  • A Planetarium show at 2 p.m. about the Ancient Heroes of Greece and Rome will be shown.
  • Guests are encouraged to dress the part as their favorite superhero or supervillain.

Admission is $15 for adults; $12 for youth, students, active and retired military and seniors. There is no admission fee for children two and under or museum members.

The traveling exhibit was created by Stage Nine Exhibitions.
