The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile has been drawing stares, grins and thumbs-up since 1936.
The hot dog company’s original car was created by Carl Mayer and built by the General Body Company. Mayer was the nephew of the company’s namesake.
Since then there have been a series of quirky specialty cars built over the years on variety of chassis sources ranging from Dodge to Willys Jeep to a Mini Cooper S.
Perhaps the craziest version from a parts standpoint was the one built in 1969. It featured Ford Thunderbird taillights and a Chevy motor home frame.
Today there are six different Wienermobiles touring the country, including the one coming to Jacksonville for a Winn-Dixie/Oscar Mayer promotional tour.
