A local Jacksonville chef got to share a bit of Florida sunshine with foodies in New York City this past weekend.
Blue Bamboo chef and owner Dennis Chan won General Mills’ 2018 Neighborhood to Nation Recipe Contest with his restaurant’s signature dessert: Sunshine State Orange Crunch Cake.
“I did a version of it and even bumped it up a little bit because we added layers of crunch in between the cake layers and also a nice little almond crunch cookie right on top,” said Chan.
Chan said the grand prize included a full page newspaper ad and a giant billboard on Beach Boulevard for his Blue Bamboo restaurant, which is located at 3820 Southside Boulevard.
He got to attend the Food Network Wine and Food Festival in New York City where he handed out samples of his winning orange cake.
A $5,000 donation was also made in Chan’s name to the American Cancer Society's Real Men Wear Pink campaign, which raises money for breast cancer research.
