Groundwork Jacksonville is set to leap ahead with its plans to restore McCoys Creek in Riverside.
The organization is getting a $250,000 National Coastal Resilience Fund Grant that Groundwork CEO Kay Ehas said will take the design phase of the project from 30 percent to nearly 100 percent.
“Groundwork Jacksonville is doing the creek-restoration plan that will look at reducing flooding, improving water quality, ecological restoration and identifying recreational spaces. And the city will implement that design.”
Ehas said the city expects to spend nearly $60 million over three years to return McCoys Creek to its natural, meandering state, as well as create bike and walking trails and raise a couple of bridges above the 100 year flood level.
The nearly three-mile long creek runs from Hollybrook Park to the St. Johns River, emptying out beneath The Florida Times-Union buildings at 1 Riverside Avenue.
