Nearly 500 purebred German Shepherds have been rescued by the Nassau Humane Society and other rescue groups after they were found in rural Georgia.
The Nassau Humane Society said the dogs we’re found in “horrendous conditions,” which it described as a “massive breeding/hoarding situation." The dogs arrived on Amelia Island Sunday.
WSAV reported Angela Powell has been booked into the Candler County Jail in connection with the case that included dogs in two Georgia counties.
The Nassau Humane Society stresses the dogs are not ready to be adopted yet.
“We do not have any puppies. Just adults that were used and abused again and again to make puppies,” the organization said on its Facebook page.
The society said the German Shepherds will need extensive medical care and full assessments before they can be considered for foster or adopted homes.
“We will be taking in more of these German Shepherds (from the property) in a few weeks via amazing rescue partners, Animal Aid USA & Guardians of Rescue,” the Nassau Humane Society said.
The society said those wanting to help can make donations online or consider adopting other available pets that need homes.
The Nassau Humane Society has also put together an Amazon wish list of needed items that people can purchase to help the animal shelter.
Due to the large number of dogs rescued, many groups in the region are taking part in the rescue, NHS said.
