St. Johns County Library System Looks To The Future

St. Johns County residents are invited to help shape the future of their public libraries.

Director Debra Rhodes Gibson said over the past decade, public libraries have become more than just a place to find a good book and a quiet place to read.

Now, libraries are a meeting place, a place people come to use a computer, and access the internet.  A wider range of learning is also taking place.

“We do everything from instructing kids in cursive handwriting to SAT preparation, sewing classes, book discussion groups. But programming was really, 10-years ago, more—we have a book discussion group and story time for the children,” said Gibson.

Gibson said a series of three library visioning sessions are planned this month so people can share their ideas about how libraries will need to change over the next decade.

The first session is this Sunday afternoon at two at the main library in downtown St. Augustine.  The others are set for the following two Sundays at Nocatee Crosswater Hall in Ponte Vedra and at the World Golf Village Renaissance Resort.

Additional information about the visioning sessions is available on the St. Johns County Public Library System’s website.
