Changing Homelessness hopes the “third time’s the charm” when it comes to getting a federal grant to help homeless young people on the First Coast.
The head of the Jacksonville-based safety net organization, Dawn Gilman, said more than a hundred teens and young adults are living on the streets, but very few local resources are available to help them.
“Right now we do have emergency shelter at the youth crisis center for minors - those that are under 18. But we do not have anything that is for young people ages 18 to 24,” said Gilman.
Gilman said there’s also a need for more intervention and outreach services for this age group.
The federal government will be awarding youth homelessness grants of up to $3 million to 17 urban communities, according to Gilman.
This year marks the third and final time Changing Homelessness can apply for the funding.
