'French Moderns: Monet to Matisse' Opens At The Cummer

The Cummer Museum’s newest exhibit is now on display.

Called French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850-1950, visitors will find paintings, drawings and sculptures in the exhibition from the era’s leading artists.

There’s 60 different paintings and sculptures representing 49 different artists,” said Cummer Director and CEO Adam Levine during a Friday appearance on First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross, adding, “We don’t have one of everything so this is a real complement to our permanent collection.”

Artists featured in the exhibit include: Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

The works in French Moderns capture the vibrancy and complexity of the Parisian art scene from 1848 until the end of World War II, according to the museum.

“In many ways, the modern world emerged between 1850 and 1950, and the artwork produced during this era continues to inspire and excite today,” said Levine.

The exhibit has been organized by Rich Aste, former Curator of European Art, and Lisa Small, Curator of European Painting and Sculpture, Brooklyn Museum.
