Anglers take note: You now have six additional recreational red snapper fishing days to take advantage of this year.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Tuesday that this year’s season has been expanded to the following Saturday and Sundays: October 12-13, 19-20 and 26-27.

The decision to allow the extra red snapper fishing was made after gathering data through the Gulf Reef Fish Survey, used to estimate how much fishing is sustainable.

“These additional days would not be possible without the Gulf Reef Fish Survey,” said FWC Chairman Robert Spottswood in an email to WJCT News. “Thank you to every angler who has taken the time to return surveys, talk to staff and participate in this program. Innovative data collection is opening doors and allowing unprecedented management opportunities for Florida.”

Private recreational anglers can fish for red snapper in state and federal waters. However, for-hire operations are limited to fishing for red snapper in Gulf state waters only, according to the FWC.

Additional information on the rules for red snapper fishing is available on the FWC’s website.
