The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office said a man who shot at deputies after they found him Wednesday behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle in front of the Publix in Ponte Vedra Beach has been apprehended.
WJCT News partner The Florida Times-Union reports the man in his 20s has been hospitalized in critical condition, while WJCT News partner News4Jax quoted Sheriff David Shoar as saying the suspect was “gravely wounded.”
Seth Phelps was bringing his son to a doctor’s appointment when he drove into a road blocked by police cars.
“And as we're finally pulling completely away, that's when my son in the back, he’s eight, he announced, 'Look, there was even a helicopter,'" Phelps told WJCT News
The Sheriff’s Office said it’s not clear whether the suspect was injured when deputies returned fire or by his own gun. No bystanders were wounded.
A shelter in place order for Ponte Vedra Beach residents near the Sawgrass shopping center has was lifted Wednesday afternoon.
