Florida’s primary is Tuesday, August 18.
In Northeast Florida, the Clay County sheriff’s race has dominated recent headlines as incumbent Sheriff Darryl Daniels faces charges and was suspended by Gov. Ron DeSantis just days before the election.
In Florida's closed primary system, voters will mostly be deciding between candidates only from their own party, with the top vote getter from each party advancing to the general election. However, there are exceptions. If a party didn't field a candidate in a race, and there are no other qualified candidates, the race will be decided by the primary, and all voters get a say.
Voters of all stripes in every First Coast county are deciding multiple races. On primary night, WJCT.org will display live returns for each of the counties as they come in.
Here’s how to vote in person at First Coast area precincts:
Duval County
For voters in City Council District 4, the headliner race is to replace outgoing City Councilman Scott Wilson, who is running for clerk of circuit and county court.
Several school board seats are also up for grabs along with judgeships, Soil and Water Conservation District seats, and precinct committeemen and committeewomen.

Clay County
In addition to the Clay County sheriff’s race, voters in Clay County will be deciding on a new school district superintendent, county commissioners and a variety of other races.

Nassau County
Although Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper is up for reelection, he is running unopposed as a Republican. Other offices with competition include a new school superintendent, school board members and county commissioners.

St. Johns County
Incumbent Sheriff David Shoar isn’t seeking reelection, leaving the battle to replace him primarily between Republicans Rob Hardwick and Christopher Strickland. Write-in candidate Scott Boutwell has also qualified but hasn’t raised any money.
Other races in St. Johns County include school board offices and county commissioners. There are three open commission seats in the city of St. Augustine, including the mayor’s commission seat.
