People gather during the 2019 Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony

Jacksonville’s Annual tree lighting ceremony will be a virtual event this year.

City officials said Thursday Mayor Lenny Curry and his family will be hosting the 2020 Jacksonville Christmas Tree Lighting but they are encouraging the public not to attend in-person to prevent a large  gathering during the pandemic.

Instead, they suggest gathering around the TV, computer or smartphone to enjoy a live video broadcast of the lighting.

The event will take place at James Weldon Johnson Park in Downtown Jacksonville Tuesday, beginning at 6:15 p.m.

WJCT News partner News4Jax will carry the event live.

Again, the public is requested not to attend in-person.
