Settlement Being Considered In Duval Teacher’s Civil Rights Lawsuit

Attorneys are considering a settlement in the case of a Duval County Public Schools teacher who is suing the district over alleged retaliation centering on a Black Lives Matter flag.

Robert E. Lee High School teacher Amy Donofrio was removed from teaching duties in March after she refused to take down a Black Lives Matter flag outside her classroom. In April, Donofrio sued the school district and former Lee High principal, Scott Schneider, alleging a pattern of retaliation because of her support for Black students and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Court documents show attorneys for the district, Schneider and Donofrio met for nearly 8 hours on June 30 in an attempt to reach a settlement.

If a settlement is not reached, the case will continue in federal court.

A spokeswoman for Duval County Public Schools declined to comment because litigation is pending. An attorney for Schneider did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
