Edward Waters University students who want to attend in-person classes and live on campus this fall will have to show proof they’ve been vaccinated against COVID-19.
Unvaccinated students will have to attend classes virtually.
The private, historically Black school formerly called Edward Waters College will also continue to require face masks and social distancing for the fall term.
The new policy was explained in a letter that President Zachary Faison sent to students this week.
As WJCT News partner News4Jax reports, pushback on the vaccination requirement has been swift and includes an online petition that quickly gathered hundreds of signatures.
The school’s policy could also violate an executive order by Gov. Ron DeSantis that prohibits businesses from requiring patrons to show proof of vaccination.
