On Wednesday, what would have been his son's 27th birthday, Ron Davis gathered with friends and well-wishers downtown to celebrate the too-short life of Jordan Davis, who was 17 when he was shot by a middle-aged man after a dispute about loud music outside a Jacksonville gas station.

During an interview, tears pooled in the corners of Davis' eyes as he explained what meaning he'd found following Jordan's death, what good had come from that terrible day in 2012.

Then Davis' phone began buzzing. It was a call from his ex-wife, Jordan's mother, Lucy McBath. He apologized: He had to take this.
