Bruising battle expected in new congressional district

Mayor Lenny Curry's announcement he won't run for Congress eliminated the most well-known Republican with the biggest fundraising network from the potential field of candidates for abrand-new district approved this week by the state Legislature.

The freshly stamped district will bring a different dynamic to congressional elections in Northeast Florida as Republican voters in Clay County will actually outnumber GOP voters in the Duval County portion of the district when the August primary election arrives.

Nassau County voters, who overwhelmingly line up with the Republican Party, also will pack a punch at the ballot box and could combine with Clay County to tilt the district toward bedroom communities and rural areas.
