Duval Schools scramble after textbook rejections

Several math textbooks selected by Duval County Public Schools for next school year are in jeopardy, leaving district officials to decide if they need to figure out a backup plan.

The school board selected McGraw Hill as the district's textbook publisher and supplier for the 2022-23 school year. But a wave of more than 50 math textbook rejections from the Florida Department of Education, including several McGraw Hill editions, is leaving school districts across Florida scrambling in the eleventh hour — Duval County is no exception.

The state is scrutinizing two McGraw Hill elementary-level textbooks, "Florida Reveal Math, Grade 1" and "Florida Reveal Math, Grade 5" for the inclusion of "critical race theory, social emotional learning and other special topics." In total, eight McGraw Hill textbooks have been rejected by the state either for including one of those topics or not meeting new state standards, according to the department.
