After recent mass shootings, calls for gun reform are getting louder every day, including from some who hold local public office.
Jacksonville Democratic state Sen. Audrey Gibson wants to see Jacksonville take action without waiting on national lawmakers.
Gibson was a criminology major in college and says the city has data that could make it more proactive in handling gun violence. Gibson is proposing a standing permanent safety commission that meets regularly.
She discussed the idea Wednesday morning on First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross.
“When we understand the data and the resources that we have available to us, and those meetings are televised — not just a meeting and only the people on the commission are talking to each other and nobody really knows what they said — that’s to make sure the community can hear it,” Gibson said.
She says the commission could include a cross section of stakeholders, including law enforcement, school officials, truant officers, mental health professionals and gun owners.
